Facial Pain

The causes of facial pain are sometimes well understood. However, many patients experience pain that is idiopathic, without a known cause. At The Bethesda Temporomandibular Joint & Facial Pain Center our doctors are at the forefront of evaluating and treating chronic facial pain.

There are many types of facial pain and many causes. Our goal is to diagnose the pain problem and determine treatment options that work for our patients to bring maximum relief.

What are some of the treatments you use for facial pain?
First, we must evaluate the patient, including:

  • Oral habits
  • Bite
  • Teeth placement
  • Muscle tension
  • Medications currently utilized

Then, depending on the results of the evaluation, we may suggest:

  • Crowns or other restorations to rebalance the teeth, mouth, joints, or muscles
  • Injections to help relax the muscle tension
  • Injections to reduce inflammation
  • Orthotic appliances
  • Medications
  • Habits alteration
